Chicks and Chickens Week : 2020

Miss Power and Miss Blade have created a wonderful series of virtual classrooms based on chicks and chickens. From video 1 - 4 you will be able to follow the journey from egg to incubator to hatching! We will post any updates and photos to this page so keep checking in!

Introduction to The Chick Classroom

Miss Blade and Miss Power have been busy creating a raft of activities on a 'chick' theme for this week. In the first video (Available when you click on the incubator) you will:
  • Meet the ducklings from last year and find out where they are living.
  • You will also get to see the new batch of eggs getting ready for incubating.
  • Get ready to follow this exciting journey from egg to chick! ​​

Today explore the classroom and check out some of these terrific activities:
  • Try 10 amazing egg experiments: from the egg
  • squeeze to walking on eggshells to sucking an egg into a bottle there are lots of eggsperiments to try out (Adult supervision necessary!)
  • Try a hatching egg craft activity.
  • Read a chick themed book. 

 Video for day 2: The Incubator ​

Click on the incubator to find out what happens to the eggs next. Discover how an incubator works. Watch the video and see can you find the answers to the following questions.
  • What will the average temperature in the incubator rise to.
  • How many mls of water  a day will Miss Power add?
  • How many days will the chicks stay in the incubator?
  • How many eggs are put into the incubator?

Candling the Eggs

Click on the incubator to see what happens to the eggs next.  Adam uses a method called candling to discover which eggs have chicken embryos in them Watch the video and see can you find the answers to the following questions.
  • How many of the eggs have chicks in them?
  • What did Adam use to 'candle' the eggs?
  • What did they discover about the water level?
  • How long have the eggs been in the incubator?

Explore the classroom and check out some of these terrific activities:
  • Try the egg drop challenge (Don't forget to ask an adult first!)
  • Listen to 'Poules et Coq' from Carnival of the Animals (Saint-Saens)
  • Read another egg themed book.
  • Find out how to tell a hard boiled egg from a raw one by spinning.
  • Discover some fun facts and lots more! 

Its Hatching Day!!

​Today is the day that we get to check in and see our eggs hatch. Click on the incubator to watch this magical  video clip.
​You will see baby chicks emerging from their eggs. it really is a spectacular and special sight! 
Huge thanks to Miss Blade and Miss Power (and not forgetting Adam) for putting together this amazing week full of brilliant activities!

  • Pick a chick art idea and try it out! You have a choice of fork print, cotton wool or fingerprint designs!
  • Listen to some chicken techno!
  • Sing along to the baby chick song.
  • Revise the anatomy of eggs.
  • Read some poultry based texts!
